Background Information The Binga community has enjoyed a close working relationship with the Austria-Zimbabwe Friendship Association (Austria) and Kunzwana Trust (Harare)since 1999.The Tonga.Online project is one of the outcomes of cultural exchange activities over the last ten years. The Binga ITC was established in February 2001, officially opened by the Minister of Information Professor Jonathan Moyo. and enjoys the support and custom of a wide cross section of the Binga community, from teachers and students to fishermen and doctors. Binga ITC are proud to have given Introduction to Computers training to over 400 individuals to date.
Fifteen computers are networked together with a scanner and printer, and access is offered to all people of the community, regardless of race, age, gender, tribal background or religious or political affiliation.
The Binga Studio at the Binga ITC was established with a donation of hardware and software from AZFA and the Austrian jazz group Windhund, who visited in 2002 and generated a lot of attention for the project and rich cultural exchange for all musicians involved, in Victoria Falls, Binga, Siachilaba, Bulawayo and Harare. The aim of the studio is to offer the opportunity for recording and documentation of traditional music styles which are in danger of disappearing, and encouraging young Tonga musicians the opportunity to develop in line with their urban counterparts.
Donors, Partners & Stakeholders The Austria-Zimbabwe Friendship Association source and procure hardware and software for the project. They also provided funding for the refurbishment of the classroom, electrical fittings, security, installation of computers, networking and training. Kunzwana Trust are the local coordinator on behalf of AZFA.

July 2006 was a very busy month for Tonga.Online with preparations for and the conduct of a strategic planning seminar with project partners visiting from Austria and Harare, namely Austria-Zimbabwe Friendship Association (AZFA), HORIZONT3000, HIVOS, and Kunzwana Trust. The seminar was held for project review and strategic planning involving all key players and stakeholders for the further development of the ICT project in the Binga District.

Hi out there, I project yabuka bwiimbili. I am reaching you from Binga ITC where all 15 computers are networked and connected to the internet. The public is now flowing in. What a success right in the beginning of the progressive year for Binga. Our prayer is that telone manages stabilising the services. Thanks, tweende tubone.

In the second half of September the yearly project visit by AZFA, Horizont3000 and Kunzwana Trust successfully came through. A number of meetings were held in Harare, Bulawayo and in Binga with Local Authorities, Management Committees and stakeholders of Syanzyundu, Siachilaba and Binga ITCs. Binga Rural District Development Committee and its Science and Technology Subcommittee invited for an "ICT for Development" Seminar to summarise the findings of a series of ITC stakeholder workshops and to work out a strategy on the way forward: |

Empowering Local Communities and Improving Local Government through ICT:
When Horizont3000 carried out the Tonga.Online project Impact assessment in 2004 there was a strong recommendation addressing Binga Highschool and the local authorities at Binga District level, especially the District Education Officer / MINEC: "The Binga RDDC (through the appropriate RDDC committee) needs to assume a policy facilitative role and this can be done by mainstreaming computer development in the overall district development plans. |

Access for All - Since the closure of the Business Opportunity Centre (BOC), the Binga ITC is once again the only public access to IT in Binga. A new advertising thrust is being made to fill the gap left by the closure of BOC. Services available include evening Internet access, computer use, typing service, scanning, printing and digital photography. |

3rd Binga ITC stakeholders seminar |

The purpose of the 3rd Binga ITC stakeholders seminar was to review the progress of the Tonga.Online project so far, particularly its outreach and extension. The advent of computers in Binga has not only contributed to uplifting education but also provided better access to information and communication for the community at large. Two more Telecenters are in the project pipeline for Sianzyundu Secondary and Siachilaba Primary School, where electrification is around the corner. |
